Ok, I know not many people read this LJ (and I don't blame you as it's fairly new and I dont' post much anyway) but I want to jump on the bandwagon and take requests too! It looks like fun. So name a pairing or series and I will try and write a short 100-500 word scribble for you. Pretty please?

Caught in the Act.
Date: 2003-08-24 10:37 pm (UTC)****
Kaito was good and caught. There was no getting out of this one.
Inspector Nakamori glowered. Kaito quaked. “And what the HELL do you have there?” Nakamori nodded at the target of tonight’s mission tight in his hand and folded his arms, waiting for an explanation.
Kaito quickly hid it behind his back. “Nothing?” While Nakamori had never been what one would call a ‘father’ figure for him. He had kept an eye out for him while he grew up and provided manly advice from time to time. And…this wasn’t something he’d been prepared to tell this good Inspector about just yet.
Nakamori was now a towering inferno of rage, his teeth sharp, his veins throbbing. He seemed to grow 10 feet taller as he roared, “KUROBA KAITO, I SAW YOU BUY THOSE CONDOMS!! YOU WERE ONLY TWO PEOPLE AHEAD OF ME IN THE DRUG STORE!!!”
“I swear to god this has nothing to do with Aoko!”
“It doesn’t?” The Inspector was clearly not buying this story. And everyone knew that Nakamori had two obsessions. Catching the Kaitou Kid…and protecting his Little Girl.
Kaito waved his hands in denial. “No!” Then he was embarrassed. “You see, there’s this guy…” He shrugged and tried not to blush.
Nakamori raised an eyebrow. “A guy?”
“Yuh-huh.”
“So you’re…”
“Yuh-huh.”
“I see.” He stroked his moustache, thoughtful. “Does Aoko know?”
“She practically threw us together.”
Nakamori was silent for a moment, processing this information. Then he slapped Kaito hard on the back. “Well then, carry on.”

Sunday was adventure day. By herself, or with Syaoran, if he wasn’t working, she would explore the city, determined to try something new, to find out every crook and cranny of her city. One week Syaoran took her to the excavation site and she listened as he reverently explained the history and knowledge hidden in the shifting sands.
This week they explored the marketplace. It was one of Sakura’s favorite places to explore because every time it was different. She learned about bright red and yellow spices from a big scary looking man while Syaoran hovered protectively. And his wife, a young woman with short cropped hair showed her eagerly how to bake them in a tasty flatbread while a great dog hovered around the cookfire.
The two of them wandered down the stalls. A nearby cart was piled with a mountain of yellow apples. “Look at all the apples Syaoran!”
He smiled at her, it was the smile she loved. Sweet and glowing and just for her. He didn’t smile like that at anyone else. “Yes Princess.”
“Stop calling me that! My name is Sakura!”
Another smile. “If you want one, they’ll probably give them to you for free.”
She tangled her fingers together behind her back. “People shouldn’t give me things just because I’m a princess.”
“They don’t,” he shrugged, “People give you things because they love you. Everyone in this kingdom loves the princess.” There was a heat in his eyes when he said that…or did she only want to see it? These new feelings trembled inside her like the sun of the ridge of the horizon.
While she blushed he continued, oblivious. “I think you should try something new though, instead. Isn’t that the point?” He smiled with a rare mischievousness.
“Hoee? Do you know something?”
He pressed a finger to her lips and she blushed bright red and led her on a twisting dash through the covered stalls. They came to a dark stall with small dark fruits that smelled delicious. “Would you like a date?”
“A…A w-what?” She stammered. Was Syaoran asking her…
“A date. You eat them.” He bought a small bag of the fruits and handed one to her.
It tasted sweet…rich and heady like honey. “It’s delicious!” she said, then she grumbled, “But you shouldn’t buy me things because I’m the princess, you know.”
He smiled again, and his eyes glowed. “I didn’t buy it because you’re the princess.” And Sakura couldn’t think of a thing to say. He continued. “I have to back out to the excavation tomorrow.”
“I’ll miss you.” These new feelings fluttered in her stomach and the taste of dates in her mouth. “When you come back…” she said, “there’s something I want to tell you…”

Richard woke up groggy and in pain. The groggy he could understand. They’d been pub-crawling. The bruise at the back of his head was something else though. He ought to remember that at least.
Shayne was awake and looking out a very small round window. He must have still been drunk because the room still seemed to sway slightly.
“You’re finally awake!”
He squinched his eyes a few times to get them back in working order and tried to rid himself of the muzzy feeling. “Where are we?”
She sighed, “On a boat.”
Oh. So he wasn’t drunk and the room really WAS moving. That was good to know. Wait. “We’re on a BOAT!?”
She nodded slouched down against the wall…hull? “Why are we on a boat?”
“We’ve been shanghaied.”
The word was unfamiliar and exotic. “Shanghaied?”
“Shanghaied, press-ganged, kidnapped….”
Good Lord. “Where are we going?”
“Shanghai.”
“Oh, hence the name.” He nodded, that made sense. “Wait, you mean in CHINA!?”
Shayne sighed again. “I believe there’s just the one.”
He reeled and ended up sitting next to her against the hull…wall. He spread out his hands, “I can’t go to China. Mother’s planned a luncheon tomorrow. With the bishop!”
She propped up her chin on her hand and looked at him sideways. She wore the familiar smile that meant she couldn’t quite believe the things that he was saying, but she found it charming. Like a child that says something clever. “Well then, we’ll have to do something about it. To make sure you don’t miss your luncheon.”
“What do you suggest?”
“Well, we can’t be far from England yet. We could probably make it if we stole a rowboat. But it would be cutting it close and hardly in style. I say we save that for plan B.”
He frowned. “Plan A being?”
“You help me take over the ship. I’ll be Captain, and we’ll sail back to London with our crew.” She looked pleased with her idea.
“And just how do you plan on accomplishing this?”
She tsked at him and waggled her finger like he’d been a naughty boy. “Richard dear, you’ll just have to trust it to Luck.”

Tanabata
Date: 2003-08-26 01:19 pm (UTC)Ok, story. Tanabata is July 7th and everyone makes wishes and celebrates the story beneath. You may have read a more dramatic version in Barry Hughart's "Bridge of Birds" book. My elementary students did a little presentation about Tanabata for me and I was geekily happy to find out that the princess's name was Orihime.
***
Once upon a time there was a weaver princess who was also the star Vega. Her name was Orihime and she sat at the banks of the Milky Way and wove beautiful fabric to please her father. But she couldn’t fall in love. Her father took pity on her and married her to the star shepherd Kengyuu who was also the star Altair. And they were very happy.
But they were separated by a river of stars and could only meet for one day a year. So Orihime would call a group of magpies and they would make a bridge for her to meet her husband.
Orihime is not a princess, and the only things she weaves are her own wild imaginings. She cannot imagine Kurosaki-kun as a shepherd either. Though the face he would make in the roll would certainly be funny.
She touches a hand to the pins in her hair. Her magpies will not carry her to her lover, but they will do something far more important. They will carry her to her destiny and her own newfound strength.
She is not a storybook princess. She is something better.
Re: Tanabata
Date: 2003-08-26 01:49 pm (UTC)And the drabble. *HEART* It fits Orihime beautifully. (I've heard of that folk tale. Did not realise the princess was called Orihime in the Japanese version, though. <3)

Date: 2003-08-27 07:57 am (UTC)But I Know What Time it is Now
Date: 2003-08-27 11:55 am (UTC)He learned quickly how important it was to establish chronology for any given crime. Saying that something was stolen between midnight and six in the morning was far too much leeway to establish tight alibis and check whereabouts. And in a Kaitou Kid case the difference between 12:00 and 12:01 could mean the difference between success and failure.
Keeping track of these little details was Hakuba’s job as a detective. He could remember exactly what day and time he first saw Kaitou Kid. He could remember the exact day and time he first met Kaitou Kuroba.
But he could not remember when his thoughts and feelings for the student cum jewel thief had become so tangled. He wanted to catch the thief and see him in jail. He wanted to wipe the smug look off of Kuroba’s face. And yet at the same time he felt relieved each time the thief escaped, having performed some illegal act of decency. He also wanted to find the cause of the brittle look that sometimes passed over Kuroba’s face, and make that go away as well.
Life without the Kaitou Kid was without challenge. And life without Kuroba Kaito was colorless. And he didn’t know what second, minute, hour or even day it had become so.

Kazuha has seen him shirtless before. She’s even seen him butt naked. But that was when they were six years old and joined by steel bracelets. Now she’s not six anymore and when she walks in on Heiji shirtless…reading a book in the hot summer heat she feels an instant of butterflies in her stomach.
“Kazuha? Jeeze, you should have knocked or something! I’ll put on a shirt.”
She blusters past him, trying to ignore the heat in her cheeks. “Oh please. You don’t have anything I haven’t seen. Half the boys on the karate team walk around shirtless during practice.”
He shrugs and drops the shirt he was about to put on. And if, when he sits back down, he’s holding himself a little better, preening a little….hell, she’s not going to call him on it. She sits next to him on the bed, but not too close.
“So what brings you by?”
“I was working on our summer break homework, and I wanted to ask you a question about the science.” As she opens her notebook across her knees she is surprised to see the omamori dangling from his neck, lying against his heart. She feels relieved, if he wears it even now in his own room, he MUST wear it on cases, right?
He moves to grab a pen, stretching across the bed towards his desk. She notices the line of a scar, pale against his dark skin.
Kazuha reaches out and touches it. It is an involuntary reaction. His breath draws in with a hiss and he sits very, very still.
“That’s where he shot you, isn’t it?”
He nods.
She remembers how scared she was that day, afraid he was dying, and her heart beats a little faster in a sympathetic echo of the memory. Her fingers move across his skin, silently remembering each brush with danger. Beaten, bruised, attacked. Why is it that Heiji always seemed to get hurt? Even she scarred him, Kazuha thought as she discovered the little nick across the back of a palm. He’d tried to hide that from her.
And other things as well. There are scars here that she doesn’t know about. Stories he never told her. She searches them all out.
Kazuha also knows that if she could part his thick hair in just the right place she would find a scar there too. A memento of Kyoto. Her fingers tangle in it briefly and it’s like he reads her thoughts. “
“I was lucky you were there that time.” He says, “ He would have killed me for sure.”
All these dangers he’s faced, and still faces. And he never seems to come out of it unscathed. Each pale knot a time she could have lost him forever. And suddenly it’s too much and the tears well up in her eyes, stinging like salt. She hugs him fiercely, burying her face against the strong line of his shoulder and not caring about the skin.
His voice is rough and warm. “Aww, Kazuha, you’re not supposed to CRY.”
She shakes her head, ponytail swinging in his face. But he loops one arm around her shoulders and pats her back with the other murmuring encouragingly.
“Oh, Heiji,” she says, and she hates the helplessness in her voice. “Oh, Heiji, be CAREFUL.”
“Nothing’s going to happen.”
“Don’t do anything stupid. Promise me. What would I do if you ever…” She can’t think it, let alone say it out loud, so he hugs him tighter instead.
“I won’t. Not as long as I have you to protect me.” He runs a finger along the cord at her neck, the twin to his own omamori.
It isn’t a confession or a declaration. Not from either of them. And tomorrow they will be back to normal. But just for now it is enough. He is her rock. And she holds the world together with her thoughts.
Everyone's a Critic
Date: 2003-08-28 09:02 am (UTC)***
Kaitou Kid once said that detectives were like critics. They only followed after artful thieves and picked their crimes apart. Kaito Kuroba is desperately glad that Hakuba never heard him say that. It wouldn’t help at all for the argument they were currently having.
After all, as the detective is quick to point out, it’s not like Kaito ever solved a mystery. He just helped out a bit so that the other detectives in the room could do their job.
And even though he may grudgingly admit that there is a purpose and necessity to the Kid, he is highly critical of Kaito’s method of detecting his father’s killers.
“Putting on your father’s great target of an outfit and traipsing about to see who takes the first shot at you is NOT detective work.” He said acidly. But Kaito knew that most of the acid was due to worry. Hakuba never liked the thought of Kaito getting hurt, and he’s annoyed when the other boy put himself in harms way on purpose.
“Yeah, well being a phantom thief isn’t exactly a cakewalk either you know. You should try it and see how far you get.”
Hakuba gave him a baleful look. “No.”
And that was the end of that.
