kaitou | Recipe for Disaster

So my JTE has a wild and crazy teaching plan for once. She wants to cook in class. Give the students English recipes, have them translate, then spend a two hour session cooking. I think this is a great idea. Since the cooking sessions will be 1st and 2nd period I suggested telling all the kids to not eat breakfast and make a western breakfast feast. Omlettes, pancakes and the like. But no, she wants to make cookies. Now. Let's go over all the ways this lesson is going to backfire miserably.

1. I'm not there that day.
Yes, the only person who has ever baked American style cookies will not be at school until the afternoon. I am also the only person who knows what a Tablespoon is.

2. The recipes
Sensei picked up the Williams Sonoma cookie book. Now this I can't REALLY blame her for. She said it was high ranking on the internet, and I'm sure she didn't realize how difficult the cookies inside were. I only found three recipes that the students could even POSSIBLY make. But even then....the directions are much more complicated than a usual recipe.

3. THE SCHOOL HAS NO OVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, you heard me. The school has no oven. They do have one small convection oven/microwave. When I pointed this out to my JTE she said, "But they made cookies for the school festival!"
Me: Yes, but they were VERY SMALL. (they were like E-Z bake oven cookies) American cookies are much bigger.
JTE: Well we'll just make these cookies smaller.
Me: Ok, well you'll have to change the baking time.
JTE: Why?
Me: O.o Because....smaller cookies bake faster.

You know, on second thought...I'm glad I'm not going to be there when they bake.
