Last night was our monthly Book Club meeting, had loads of fun as usual. This month we discussed Asian/Pacific books, so you know I had that in the bag. I brought all kinds of things to share. Fantasy based in the Heian period, 18th century Chinese mystery novels, an autobiography of a girl in the Red Guard, manga, doujinshi (HP, gen)... I even brought the R.O.D. OVA's. I mean, what better anime for a bunch of book lovers than that!?

Next month is Gay/Lesbian books, I haven't a clue what to read. I'm fighting the temptation to bring BL manga. Thank God I gave away the Gay Caveman manga otherwise I'd never be able to resist the temptation. Any suggestions on actual books to read for the meeting?

Mercedes Lackey, The Last Herald Mage trilogy. With Vanyel. XD

XP I've left my Lackey years behind I think. I don't think I could honestly rec them. (says nothing about the Mage Storms books hidden in her bookshelf) I was thinking about them this morning while brushing my teeth actually. I know she was into J-culture early in her career, and I was musing on whether or not she was exposed to yaoi comics or anything. Because Vanyel is SO yaoi, the essence of fangirl and fangirlic angst. XD

Most of them are enjoyable but not really reccable. I think the Vanyel ones are my favourite, though. It might be worth it. *grin*

The Charioteer by Mary Renault. Actually, the majority of Renault's works are focused towards the G/L crowd, but they're historical. Especially her Alexander the Great series.

She's Not There: A Life In Two Genders, by Jennifer Finney Boylan. it's quite well-written and entertaining, whether you like autobiographies or not and whether you care much about queer studies or not ^^

"Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters. I'm not actually that fond of her work or her characters, but a lot of other people like her. Plus, thieves. Plus, lesbian cred.

If fantasy is kosher, then maybe the Nightrunner series...? Of course, there's not a whole lot of gay in the first book, so maybe that's not a good idea. But the first book in the Tamir trilogy, also by Lynn Flewelling, is pretty interesing from a transgender point of view.

Smoke and Shadows by Tanya Huff. It's Fantasy/Horror, and a branch-out of another mostly-straight-type series by Tanya Huff(although the main character of Smoke and Shadows is there, he's more in the background).

lessee.. Ricardo Pinto? Think that was the name. He wrote some... er, technically the main character is sorta gay, but.. I found his books hard going, and didn't make it through the first volume, to be honest >_o;

You could always take, not necessarily BL manga, but fanfics? There are some ~quality~ fics out there, you gotta admit. Or, y'know, doujin?

Alien Taste by Wen Spencer... The lead character has two (adoptive) moms, and a sister conceived through egg-on-egg fertilization. And the book is weird and fun. You'll discover what we mean when we say "Sorry, I must've lost that mouse."
