My Weekend

Back from Canada. The final presentation only went so-so. Boss is still counting it as a win, even if it wasn't a 'grand slam' but I think it's closer to a walk, or maybe a bunt. I went back to Michigan, which was a little weird because my parents were actually out on vacation, so it was just me and the cat.

I did get to spend the afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] altodescant, [livejournal.com profile] roseinmist and their ridiculously adorable children, toddling around the Japanese shops in the area. So that was a win. Shokupan! bento boxes! green tea ice cream! And we went to the very authentic ramen restaurant where not one of us ordered ramen. I bought a new Japanese cookbook "SUPER Easy Recipes!" the cover says things like 'food in one minute!' 'just mix it!' 'just zap it!' Now that is my kind of cooking.

I noticed my car making a weird noise so the rest of the weekend was spent trying to figure out what it was, and if it meant anything really bad, or just sort of bad. After consulting askMetafilter I've decided to go with 'sort of bad' and it can wait until my next paycheck, or getting reimbursed from the Canada trip, whichever comes first.

The really crummy thing was finding that fruit flies moved in while I was gone. I thought I'd done a decent job of making the house spic and span before I left, but maybe I only got the spic part covered. The weird thing is that the flies tend to cluster where there's no food. Like...my DVD collection. I want to tell them 'Yes, I know that Robert Downey Jr. is delicious. But I don't think that's the kind of delicious you're going for.' Well, I'll show them who's boss. Thank god tomorrow is trash day.

(Hi, I'm a friend of roseinmist's, saw your post on her flist.) They might be drain flies, not fruit flies. They look identical (to non-entomologist me, anyway) and breed in drains that have standing water. We don't use our guest bath very often and the drain flies will breed like crazy. Since you've been out of town, it's possible the drain flies decided to house-sit for you. The good news is that they go away once you use the drain again.

Ha! love your icons.

I'm pretty sure they're fruit flies, but I'll definitely flush the drain just in case. (EVERYTHING is getting a thorough cleaning)

Welcome back home, hon. >^_^<

Hee, I like the sound of that Japanese cookbook. You'll have to let us know how it goes.

Seeing [livejournal.com profile] darthsnugglebun, I shall hope they are drain flies, not fruit flies, and will leave you alone soon. *crosses fingers*

Pretty sure they're fruit flies, but even then I should be able to clear them up without too much fuss. I picked up some apple vinegar for traps today, and a fly specific bug spray. That plus a deep cleaning should do the trick.

I promise It'll be insect free next time you visit!
