[livejournal.com profile] soranokumo was asking about my back last night, and I'm very pleased to say that I feel 100% better. I really owe a lot to the great Nurse Practitioner I saw, who did more than throw pain killers at me. And to the Physical Therapists who gave me exercises and stretches that helped get me back on my feet and will help me from ever screwing myself up like that again.

In that sense, my health care was pretty ossim.

In other ways...not so much. The x-ray the NP ordered was denied, so that's $235 out of pocket. The injection she ordered was also denied, so that's another 60. And the bills from the visit to Urgent Care, the ER and Physical Therapy haven't even been submitted yet, let alone processed. The NP was already worried that insurance wouldn't cover the massage portion of therapy when she ordered it, so I'm not holding out much hope for that. I should be going back to the doctor to check on my iron levels, my prescription iron pills have run out, and it's more than 2 months after they told me to come back. But that ended up costing me $200 to get my bloodwork done. And I'm reluctant to pay that again just to get told 'yes, keep taking iron.'

And I know I've got it good. This is good insurance I'm on, and the whole thing could have been so much worse. This isn't going to put me in the poor house, it just means I can't go to Boston anytime soon, and maybe I should knit the yarn I've got instead of eyeing that pretty silk that comes with beads and sequins. I have worked with someone who had to get a second job to pay off her medical bills after falling off a ladder. And again, we had pretty 'good' insurance at the time.

So it just makes me angry to see these talking heads go on like we don't need health care reform. I know there are bad point in every system, but this is getting ridiculous.

(ETA: HR says I can fight some of this at least)

Oh man... Before I even got down to the bottom of your post, I was sitting beside [livejournal.com profile] mewsgryphoncat on the couch howling "Denied?? Oh they're so fulla shit... she's gotta fight that."

Man, you were in enough pain that you couldn't WORK. You couldn't even STAND. If that doesn't qualify for needing help, they're out of their minds and just begging for a lawsuit.

Well, I'm glad you are better. It seems like the insurance company has it's head up its a** and you would do well to help them surgically remove at least one eye from the darkness. :-) (What I'm saying is: Fight it tooth and nail!)

But Anne! If you don't help the insurance company turn a profit on your health, Zombie Lenin will win! And then we'll... I don't really know what. All be eating brains borscht three meals a day or something. What really bugs me about all the hand-wringing over socialist heath care is that the people who are so concerned are mostly the ones who plainly never had to worry about how a medical bill was going to get paid.

I'm glad to hear you're feeling better, though.

How come the idea of Zombie Lenin forcing us to eat "brain borscht" makes me think of this?

................. >_< *HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUG*

Yes. Health care reform is good. It sucks that part of the reason my salary is so low, according to the people who are supposedly smart enough to run the university, is because we get "such great benefits". Yeah. Such great benefits so long as you go only to hospitals directly connected to the university (and there are SO many of those close to home *eyeroll*), so long as you don't have to get any major prescriptions, and... argh.

Regardless, I'm glad you're feeling better, and yes... I hope HR helps you fight some of this because that's ridiculous.

*makes face* I hope you can get your insurance to pony up your cover, because that's ridiculous. And I'm glad you're feeling better!
