If it was Lucius's plan all along to put Tom Riddle's Diary in the Weasley cauldron of books (as seems to be hinted at in the end by Dumbledore's 'And what a scandal it would have been after all of Mr. Weasley's pro-muggle legislature if his kid was killing muggles' line) How long do you think he spent waiting around for them?

Owner of Flourish & Blotts: Um...Mr. Malfoy? It's closing time.
Malfoy: They have to show up for textbooks sooner or later, curse it.
Owner: Yes sir, see you tomorrow at opening?
Malfoy: *snarl*

Or... >.> <.< Lucius could just know Arthur really well or keeps tabs on him or had someone tip him off when the Weasleys were seen in Diagon Alley. ^.^ ::then again, ships Lucius/Arthur lalala::

STALKER!

*snickers* And that's something I haven't thought about...ever. I just always assumed all wizards shopped then for Hogwarts supplies, as Rowling has led us to believe. Stupid me.

There seemed to me to be a gap of time between getting the letter and going out shopping. Especially in three when Harry buys his books before Ron and Hermione. I mean, the entire wizarding population can't get them on one day, right? Lucius is so lucky that the Weaselys don't use Amazon.com. Or whatever a wizarding equivalent would be....
