Is this thing on?

So a few weeks ago I told my mom that I was thinking of getting a sewing machine this year, and since she's fabulous at quilting and making clothing and all that jazz, I would appreciate her advice. This past weekend I went home to visit and she said, 'let's go looking, just to get an idea of what's out there.'
So three guesses as to who now has a new sewing machine that they spent too much on and aren't quite prepared for? The first two guesses don't count.
Now I just need to figure out what to make.
FinallyI'm going to steal this from Thornescratch...
"I want to do a meme, but my attention span is low. Ask for a character or pairing, add one word to it, get a couple sentences of fic! No limits."

Date: 2012-03-20 12:25 am (UTC)It wasn't till after I left the shop that I realized it was because *after tax* it came to $317 exactly.
Today after work I went to a shop near me and picked up a rotary cutter, cutting mat and big-ass plastic ruler. I think my spending is done for QUITE awhile now.
Oh! completely unrelated, but I think you'll get a kick out of my "cosplay" gloves. I just finished the right hand, and need to start the left. They're not actual cosplay, but they sure look like they ought to be from Square. http://www.flickr.com/photos/darjeelingtea/6819132120/in/photostream

Date: 2012-03-20 01:30 pm (UTC)For your first thing I'd recommend something simple (I seem to remember you starting off knitting with washcloths and scarves). When I first learnt to sew I made things like pencil cases, drawstring bags and pillowcases before moving onto very simple patterns like elastic-waist shorts and T-shirts. But if there's something more complicated that you really want to make, go for it! Just, you know, measure twice cut once, pin pin pin, and don't rush ;)
And use patterns! They're very handy :)
oooh what a cool glove! I like the colour and the cabling pattern :3
