Let's Do This Thing!
Aug. 23rd, 2010 01:19 pmSince I am driving
aphelion_orion crazy, it's only fair to give her the same chance with me... (and the rest of you too)
Ask me my Top Five whatevers. Fannish or literary or RL or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what -- fandoms, characters, ice cream flavours, cartoon moments, women/men in my fandoms, OTPs, ideal holiday destinations, goals for the future, celebrity crushes, books I wish would be made into movies, love songs, etc. And I will answer them allin a new entry in the comments because it gets confusing.

BOOYAH
Date: 2010-08-26 01:39 am (UTC)2. The Le Chambon-Sur-Lignon Conspiracy of Good (http://www.raoulwallenberg.net/?en/saviors/others/2468.htmy). The entire town worked together to shelter the Jews. Everyone knew about it. The officials came with buses to arrest them and cart them away....and left empty handed. It's like this one town was just an impenetrable wall of goodness.
3. Ok, enough with the sweetness, we need some kickass (http://www.kclibrary.org/?q=blog/month-kansas-city-history/strange-bedfellows). Nelly Don was a Kansas City Fashion designer, and in 1931 she and her chauffeur were kidnapped. Her neighbor, politician James Reed (whom she was having an affair with) not her husband moved in for rescue. He called the local mob boss and threatened to take out time on national radio and air every secret and connection that he knew if she wasn't quickly and safely returned. So it was actually the mob itself that mobilized and freed her. And then she divorced her husband and married Reed.
4. Stetson Kenedy uses Superman to take on the KKK. (http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/07.02.98/comics-9826.html) The Comic Con protesters have nothing on Stetson Kenedy. His black nanny was lynched when he was a child, and he made it his life mission to take down the KKK. But he couldn't get anyone to pay attention...except for the writers of the Superman radio show. He started feeding them all the real codewords and secrets, which ended up being used in the show by the villains. So now all these men in the Klan came home from meetings to find their kids playing Superman, using & mocking their terms and thinking of the KKK as the bad guys. At the time the KKK was poised to become a major movement in the US, and after the radio show membership and influence plummeted.
5. John Wycliffe translating the Bible into English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wyclif%27s_Bible). I'm not a religious person, but the act of translating the Bible into the vernacular had such a tremendous impact on history, and on the English Language that I'd still put it on this list. And it's Wycliffe's translation that gave us some of the most beautiful poetry that English ever had, and still influences it today.

Date: 2010-08-25 03:09 pm (UTC)2. Brown Suede Linea Paolo heels. I can't walk in them at all, but my feet look so sexy.
3. Black Anne Klein heels with black embroidery and rhinestones...classy ones. I went to see a drag show wearing them, and was comforted that even if they had better legs, I had better shoes.
4. T-Shirt from the Chicago Library that says 'I went to Chicago and all I did was Read' -- long since worn to tatters.
5. Gray jacket I bought in Japan that's lightweight and I think looks very sharp & professional on me.
