So I've been going through terrible writer's block. This is not good seeing as I'm going to a writing workshop, complete with agent pitches in less than a month. So late last night when I saw
flidgetjerome online I asked her to give me a prompt, just to write a little ficbit to shake myself out of it.
Years ago I did that and she gave me the prompt 'Tea.' I ended up giving her a short story about a socialite that makes first contact with an alien race by throwing them a tea party. Last night she prompted me with.....actually I'll put the prompt at the end so I don't spoil it.
flidgetjerome, this version is a bit different than what I sent you last night, since I've been able to put a little more effort into it.
"Sophie, we're going to be late."
Paul's wife unclipped a dangly gold earring from one ear. "It's not going to work, Paul, you'll just have to go without me."
He goggled at her. "You can't just not go. You've been looking forward to this party. You told me so. You bought a new dress, you dieted for this party!"
Her mouth twisted in the reflection of the mirror. "Oh I'm well aware of that Paul. And it's entirely your fault. I can't believe you did this to me." Then she dropped her eyes and started rooting through her shades of lipstick, selecting 'simply mauvelous.'
"My fault!? How is this my fault! I had to sell my soul just to finagle us tickets to this thing." He'd always thought the term 'seeing red' was just for stories. But he understood it now. He really did.
Sophie turned from the mirror, lipstick in hand. She gave him a look like he'd just grown a second head. "Yes, I know. You sold your soul. And as long as you're being possessed I can't exactly come as your Plus One, now can I?"
While he gaped at her she started drawing a lipstick circle on the glass tile floor of the bathroom. "Now get over here so I can perform a quick exorcism."
Flidget's prompts were : 'a party' and 'demonic possession'
