Creepy Guy and the Yard Sale of Doom.
Jul. 24th, 2006 10:14 amOK, yes, this is very very late. In fact, this happened over a month ago now, but it's a great story. I'm sorry I've been so invisible on LJ lately, but between a project for my mom's birthday that I was working on, and just being too stressed out about work to want to write about it....sorry.
But now I will tell you the amazing story of
One of our customers was a little ticked at us because we keep sending them bad parts that we get from our parent company. When the boxes come from Japan, we just stick a new sticker on them and send them out. So someone from their Head Office, and someone from their plant in Mexico came to audit our system for pass through parts. I had wanted Creepy Guy (hence to be known as CG) to be included, because my new boss hadn't been with our company very long yet, and CG was sometimes out in the plant more than I am, and I thought he might be able to answer some questions from the customer that I couldn't. That was really, really dumb of me.
The audit itself went very well. I think that the customer was impressed with our open attitude and that we admitted our shortcomings and had plans to fix them. However as we reviewed their findings, I noticed that there were some misunderstandings. There were parts of the audit where I stepped away to grab paperwork or a sample part, and I think CG dominated the conversation when I was gone. And some of the things he told them were wrong...so wrong that we were scoring lower!! But I got that cleared up and our score got better. Whew!
Because the audit finished early, and we were doing our best to form a positive relationship with the customer my boss invited our guests to lunch. I had never been to the place they picked before, but my boss and CG knew the way. We split into two cars, with my boss and another Japanese guy in the first car, and CG, our two guests and myself following in the second.
We were following my boss down the road, and there was a Yard Sale on our right. We continued on towards the 4 stop intersection, but where my boss turned right, Mark turned left and turned back down the street. There was apparently a slide for small children on sale. CG said that it was very hard to find those kind of toys, even the ‘Little Tykes’ were too big for his triplets yet. He was afraid that if he waited until the end of the day that it would be gone. So he took our two customers to a yard sale on company time.
I know that I should have said something, or called my boss to let him know what was happening, but at the time I was surprised and not sure what to do. I didn’t want to say anything in front of the customers, I was afraid that that would look as bad as stopping in the first place.
We arrived at the restaurant not long after but the others weren't there. I called my boss then, to let him know we were at the restaurant. When we got there I filled them in on what happened in Japanese. Which is why I missed the next part of CG's great performance, but I heard about it later from my boss.
He asked the two ladies whether or not they were married. And when the Mexican woman said no, CG said something to the line of "Ohhhh! Well! You know, you ought to just send some pictures on up here, ha ha ha ha." Which, I'm sure he didn't actually mean anything by, but he's Creepy, so it was disturbing.
I managed to wrestle the conversation away from CG, who'd moved on to talking about his triplets with my considerable mad skillz, and the rest of the lunch didn't go too badly.
Driving back to our company, CG pulled into a middle lane and turned on his blinker. I asked where he was going, and he replied that he was just going to stop for a moment at the ATM. I tried to be very quiet, but I asked him if he thought that that was ok, and told him that Nakaya was very angry at us for stopping at the yard sale.
He just went, "Oh, OK," and went back to our company. Didn't have a clue that he'd done anything wrong. When we got back I had to write e-mails to our guests apologizing for his behavior, and then I had to write up a statement about it. Not that anything actually happened.
And it should show you how badly things have been going at work that this was really the least of the things he's done lately.

Date: 2006-07-24 04:54 pm (UTC)And then there was this big project he was in charge of, because one of our suppliers is short shipping us parts we send them to be plated in black. What we send them is not what we get back. It took him 8, yes EIGHT drafts to write up Meeting Minutes that the boss was satisfied with. Then after the arc welder hand counted the parts to check the quantity, CG went behind his back and recounted with a different number...but he forgot to count a few boxes and maybe now we didn't ship them, or something, so we don't know how many parts we actually sent them for our big test to see if we get the right number back. And then! Then! He wrote to the supplier and TOLD them how many we were shipping them, (well, what he thought we were). Which really kind of defeats the purpose of testing them. And remember, he was the one leading all these meetings, so it's not like he didn't know.
Grr! Argh! Seethe! And there's no alcohol to be had at work so I will content myself with M&Ms (and water, ya know, because I'm being healthy).
