kaitou: (The Path that Rocks)

I think this coming November I'm going to take another stab at the same Nano project I tried and failed at last year.  Where a guy takes local trains all across an empire to get to the ocean...where he's convinced that the world will end.  Believe it or not, this is a happy story.  But anyway...I figure it will go better if I start doing all my world building, try and make it really rich, since Location is such a key thing for it.  And of course, being Nano, I want to stretch my word count as ridiculously as possible.

So I decided that instead of saying 'March' I'd say 'the month of Fog.'  Keen, huh?  one word to four!  And then I decided to make the months follow elements, but not four, the Chinese five elements, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal.  Those will be the 5 seasons, each with three months.  The 1st and 3rd month of each season is a noun that doesn't have a special plural form.  And I want the second to be a Verb, perferably an -ing verb.  I'm missing two for Water and Fire...any ideas?

Water:
1.  Ice
2.
3. Fog

Wood:
1.  Moss
2.  Planting
3.  Grass

Fire:
1.  Light
2.
3.  Smoke

Earth:
1. Soil
2. Harvesting
3.  Stone

Metal:
1.  Silver
2.  Making
3.  Glass

Also, all the towns are named after various Gods.  Each region in my 'world' will have cities corresponding to a certain Mythology, and so you can kind of trace where country boundaries used to be before they were swallowed by the empire.  Anything you're particularly interested in seeing?  Must-have God/dess names?

Maybe 'Mist' instead of 'Fog'?
Hmmm... Rain?

'Heat' or 'Hot' for fire?

I waffled between Mist and Fog for awhile, but since I'm a big fan of fog (despite my AIM nick being Mistwind...)I decided to go for that. It seems like a colder thing than mist, and this is a winter-ish month.

How about Snow, Ice, Fog for Water and Light, Flame, Smoke for Fire?

Got no ideas for suggestions, sorry, but the concept and what you have so far sounds pretty neat. :)

I would suggest "burning" for the second fire month, especially since this would be the highest month of summer heat (if the middle month was truly mid-summer). For water, perhaps "melting", since that would be a fine transition from ice to fog and the natural course of action at the time in the season's cycle. The only hitch with these suggestions is that the other "-ing" months are actions for people to do, and my suggestions are warnings or things to look for.

I really can't think of action "-ing"s that would replace my suggestions though. This is certainly a wonderful background setup. I am very very interested!

I like 'burning,' Or Twig suggested 'Lighting' and changing Light to something else. Of course, Lighting is too much like Lightning...You're right I am kind of looking for people-doing verbs instead of happening verbs. But people can burn things, so I think I'll go with that. Thanks!!!

Water is the real tricky one. Especially since it's a winter-time thing. I may have to go with melting. I can just see someone's diary entry now... "Monday, the seventh day of the month of being slightly damp, Dear Diary..."
