Oh good grief, this got out of hand.

So I said I would come back with more stuff about why I love Odoru Daisousasen so much. And I started writing about my favorite mix and match romantic pairings. But I got a little carried away.

One of the things I love about Odoru is that it is extremely shipper friendly. It doesn't really matter what goggles you're wearing, you're going to find a pairing for you.

Now, the main pairing that the show pushes is Aoshima/Sumire. And I can't deny it, they'd be adorable together. They're totally best friends who can tell each other anything. She bullies him and makes him take her out to fancy dinners... but she also fusses over him when he's hurt or feeling low. Sumire and Aoshima both have doubts from time to time about the Job and whether it's worth it, and they're usually the one to pull each other out of that doubt.

The funny thing for this 'canon' pairing is that the show really doesn't push it that much. Neither character ever moons over the other, and most of the implication is done by other characters. (Most noticably the time when their bosses get together and shake their heads over the idea of them as a couple, since they're both 'enlisted' and not career, which would be bad financially) Sure, Sumire is always trying to get him out on a date, but that has to do with her soft woobie nougat center than a specific interest in Aoshima. The show mostly pushes this pairing with a sense of comfortableness and inevitability. They're not ever going to be in passionate Twilight love. They're just gonna go 'hey, you want to?' 'yeah, ok' and putter along comfortably for the rest of their lives. And there's a charm to that kind of pairing too.

But even if the 'canon' pairing has it's own charm, that doesn't mean that it's the one with the most chemistry.

The pairing with the most chemistry is easily Aoshima/Muroi. They challenge each other, and compliment each other. Aoshima is one of the few people in Muroi's life that is not a yes man. He's one of the few people that hasn't gotten lost in the bureacracy to the point that he's more interested in promotions and politics, and still cares more about helping people. Aoshima really becomes Muroi's touchstone, reminding him what they're supposed to be all about. Muroi on the other hand becomes someone that Aoshima looks up to and relies on. Aoshima is willing to put everything on the line to make sure that Muroi has the freedom to do the right thing in support of the front line police, and will stand up to anyone in defense of him.

And my god the slash just writes itself. Like in the second episode where Muroi says that they make a good team (literally a good combination). Or when they smoke cigarettes together. Or when Muroi says they'll have to have dinner together sometime and Aoshima tells him to pick him up in the helicopter. (zomg! <3) Or the times when Aoshima stands up for Muroi, or that Muroi angsts over Aoshima... so much love there.

But if neither of these options works for you, don't worry, there is more.

Muroi/Sumire is also a good option. A lof of the things that make Aoshima good for Muroi also apply to Sumire. She'll also tell it to him straight, and stand her ground against him. And she can tease him too. And in Sumire's favor over Aoshima, she's generally not as...fluffy... as Aoshima is. I think Muroi would spend a lot less time be utterly exasperated by her.

Muroi/Yukino is a bit squintier, but I still think it could work. It hits plenty of well-worn shipper buttons. Because Yukino is a sweet delicate sad girl in snow, and Muroi is rather awful to her in the first few episodes, it must be love, right? And there's a very brief scene in the series where you get to see her bring out his marginaly softer-human side.

Then there's Sumire/Yukino. Slumber party! Do I really need to say more? I find this one harder to articulate, but I really do think they'd be pretty squee worthy together. I can imagine Sumire bucking up Yukino when she's indecisive, and Yukino reeling Sumire back when she loses her temper.

Finally (ok, almost finally) there's Aoshima/Yukino. Yukino imprints on Aoshima like a baby duck after her dad gets killed and there's no denying it. And Aoshima is very protective of her. I can imagine in this pairing that Aoshima would actually have someone who respected him, appreciated him, and fussed over him without having to put up a front about it.

And Finally Finally! I must mention, though I do it grudgingly, that the show really really pushes Mashita/Yukino. He is not in my top four characters, so he does not get a loving writeup from me. He's a nice enough character, but he's a dip. I'm sorry, he just is, and Yukino can do better than that.

Ok, that's totally enough about that. Though I will probably be back to talk more about other aspects of the show I like soon.
