My kind of excitement
Oct. 3rd, 2007 09:14 amI always thought the Kroger near me was pretty nice for a grocery store. They have enough of the organic stuff and interesting stuff to make me happy without breaking my bank in a free-range-ooh-la-la Dorothy Lane Market sort of way. But they just rebuilt the one near me into a Super Kroger, and it just opened yesterday.
Now I'd assumed that Super Kroger was going to be like the a Kroger version of Walmart, or Meijer's. But imagine my surprise when it turned out that they were going for Walmart meets Dorothy Lane Market. I wandered down the produce area goggling at Japanese persimmons, lychee and papaya, at the zillion fancy cheeses in the cheese bar, the olive bar, the deli with curried chicken salad with raisins in it (made an excellent soft dinner) and even a sushi bar. In other words, an amazing array of foods that no one else in my side of Dayton will eat besides me.
But an even bigger surprise was the wine selection. HUGE! And they had like, 4 guys working there who knew all about wine and could explain all kinds of things...a 25 cent wine tasting, and a special cooler for the special things like the high end champagnes and ice wine. Yes! Ice wine! I bought a bottle of something I'd tried at the ice wine tasting and happily took it home only to remember that I don't have a corkscrew. Alas! Well, that'll be easy enough to pick up today.
