A Tale of Two Vaios
Jun. 3rd, 2007 09:02 pmWhen I lived in Japan my laptop died a painful death. I spent hours with customer service with no luck...and because I could not live without the internet for more than a week...(seriously, I broke back into school after the teachers had all left to get my fix) I went to the Principal and said 'I won't be coming in tomorrrow, I need to go buy a computer.' Then I went all the way to Osaka to buy an English OS laptop.
All was well and good for another year. Then I came back to America and immediately fried my Japanese laptop in a power out. Giant lump of plastic. Couldn't even get it to turn on.
For reasons I can't remember anymore, I ended up getting the American laptop fixed, and have been using that as my backup machine ever since. But lately it's been starting to go downhill. This is no surprise because it's probably about 7 years old, and tend to wear out my computers fast.
So the other day our IT guy came to fix some bugs at work (though he still can't figure out why my Excel will randomly lose the color orange every now and then), and I asked him for a ballpark figure on how expensive it would be to fix the laptop. I was assuming there was a problem with the harddrive, and I wasn't sure it wouldn't just be cheaper to replace the laptop altogether.
"Nah, just try taking the battery out," he says.
And it worked! Almost THREE YEARS now, and that's how simple it all was. *facepalms*
Now I'm sifting through the contents of the laptop, all the things that weren't on the last big backup, and it's SO nostalgic. Winamp with skins of CardCaptor Sakura and W Juliet...A gag story about the Space Elevator that I don't even remember writing...The original drafts of fanfic that I never finished because I was so frustrated at losing the drafts...Stargate music videos.... It's such a weird trip down memory lane.
Welcome back Aoshima! I missed you!
