But, like Bridge of Birds, say... he didn't really set it in a historically grounded China. (In fact, it just doesn't read like any China at all to me, which is why I look at it funny, but.) I think it gives you a lot of freedom if you just change the names a bit--and it'd be a lot easier to write than to find someone to vet it for historical points (and then find out that a major plot device was impossible). Plus! You wouldn't have to worry so much about accuracy, and just have fun with the story.

A lot of people seem to think it'd be interesting, and you know the area, so you probably could invoke an image of it pretty well. You'd have more trouble with family structures of the Kamakura Period, or the actual Jokyu Disturbance, which is why I recommend a fantasy version with a different name. (Plus, then, you wouldn't be limited by having Go-Toba being a tactical idiot, and a bit of a privileged brat. Because he was. The brat bit coming from a story or two in 古今聴聞集.)
