The Opposite of Brown
Sep. 19th, 2008 11:06 amOne of the things I love about manga/anime...especially shojou manga/anime is the unapologetic goofiness and melodrama. I love when the heroine (who has previously disguised herself as a boy to get closer to her idol) gets almost sexually assaulted, gets rescued by the hero, falls off a cliff, twists her ankle and faints due to a fever. All in about the space of 10 pages. (1 point for knowing the manga)
Or the heroine grew up thinking that she was an orphan, but is now looking for her mother via a special locket and diary, and incompetent-yet-evil-men are after her and she's hiding in a circus, and there's a handsome guy who keeps rescuing her when she gets into too much trouble (which is really impressive since she's always in a different COUNTRY than the week before) but her white knight has a twin brother...which one is she actually in love with. Also baby lions. (2 points for knowing this series)
And the best thing is that it isn't limited to manga/anime! Even TV! Things like the one where the hero is an orphan (but all grown up) with a talking myna bird who competes in underground eating competitions and donates the money anonymously to the orphanage. (10 points) Or the one with the plucky underdogs that struggle to re-establish the synchronized swim team at their all boys school? (5 points)
And EVEN BETTER it's not limited to Japanese stuff. Check out the blurb from this Korean show, 'I Really, Really, Like You' that I'm now desperate to see: "Cheerful country girl Bong Soon rescues an injured man near her village one day, and the two become good friends. Little does she know, the man she rescued is actually the President's son Jang Joon Won! Later on, Bong Soon moves to Seoul to look for her long-lost parents and ends up finding a job as assistant cook at the Blue House. There she meets up with Joon Won again, not to mention his hot-tempered bodyguard Bong Ki who's always making life difficult for her. Bong Soon gathers her courage to confess her feelings to Joon Won, only to discover that he has a daughter and an ill wife. What's more, he might be her brother!"
I just love this stuff. (How many points did you get?)
