Where no Knitter has gone before

You know, one of my favorite things about Star Trek has got to be the knitter's reaction. I'm on a couple of Geek groups on Ravelry (if you knit or crochet and you don't know Ravelry you need to go sign up right now) and the reaction there has been hilarious and awesome.

Already there's a pattern up for Scotty's Knit Hat.

And there are multiple threads devoted to Spock's sweater. I give it 3 weeks before there's a pattern.

It seems to me that there are 3 geek projects that any geeky knitter has to make at least one of.

  1. Harry Potter Scarf

  2. Jayne Hat

  3. 4th Doctor Scarf

I know there's more, but I think those are the big three. Let me know if I'm missing an obvious one, I'm a bit ditzy today. I ought to get around to making some of these at some point. What do you think I should try?

I might have to do the Jayne hat. One of the next things on my list of techniques to learn is knitting in the round. On the other hand, I have a whole BOOK of Harry Potter projects (Charmed Knits)

Are you on Ravelry?

Knitting in the round on dpns (double-pointed needles) is amazingly easy; if you want a good place to start, try Silver's Sock Tutorial. Even if you don't make the socks, it's a fantastic place to see close-up photos of how the stitches should look. ^__^

Thank you! There's a yarn store near me (back end of nowhere near, so read 1.5 hrs away) that's doing two sock classes this summer. One's on DPN and one's on circuluar. I've been debating which one to take. Maybe I'll try the DPN one.

I'm told that it's easier to learn circular if you've learned dpn first, but I only know dpn so I'm not sure. I *do* know that I've made about 20 pairs of my own needles from dowels-- I kept needing different sizes, and buying .79 dowel-rods and sanding 'em down was a lot cheaper than paying $4-$6 for a set of dpns. And I could pick the wood-- walnut makes NICE needles.

I used circulars for the Jayne hat but I could've transferred to double points doing the decreases to the top of the hat. It's probably amazing that it came out so well with out them.

There are a couple of pictures here but none on a model. I can rectify that, though.
