It belongs in a museum!

The day I left SK Tech one of the office ladies was passing around catalogs of things her son was selling for school. Since one of them was for magazines, and I moved to a land without bookstores (srsly, there are 10 bookstores in the phonebook, one is a comic book store, 4 are Hallmarks, 3 are other gift shops, one is really a coffee shop and the last one is the Cutting Edge Discount Christian Bookstore) I thought a few magazine subscriptions would be just what I needed.

And yesterday I finally got my copy of Archeology magazine. I haven't had an actual subscription since I was 13 and was selling magazines myself and seriously wanted to be an archaeologist myself. At the time I remember finding the magazine mostly dry and uninteresting, and that I mostly looked at the ads for history-adventure-sightseeing. But as a grown up I've gone back and absolutely loved it, and bought it religiously every other month at the bookstore.

You have to love a magazine that can include sidebars like the Indy Spirit Awards, Or think to put detailed well researched articles like this on their website, for free! But seriously, this month they have an interesting Crystal Skull tie in story about the historical trade in fake Mesoamerican artifacts.

It's a shame that I didn't keep any of my old copies of the magazine. I'd love to go back now and find out if the magazine has really gotten more accessible and fun, or if I've just grown into it.

Heh; in that case, just on the chance that you've missed it, let me introduce you to the archaeoblog. Nice little syndicated feed ranging from tons of serious articles about archaeological finds all around the world to silly commentary and blather about the blogmod's mom's chicken soup or indie music in the late 90's or whatever. Generally amusing, and DAMN but there're some good articles in there. Have fun! My original major in college was archeology

Ooh, thank you!! I'll definitely check that out. I started reading http://www.worldhistoryblog.com/, and I used to read Mary Beard's blog (Cambridge Classics Don) but I couldn't stand it anymore. She really brings out the wank in me.

Archaeology Magazine

Way back in the dark ages of the early '90s I became an archaeologist. I think I was the only person in my Master's program who was not inspired by Indiana Jones. In said program there was much elitism and looking down noses at "lay archaeology." It is one of the things that finally convinced me that I didn't want to work in an academic setting. Anyway, Archaeology Magazine was alternately bashed for pandering to the masses and lauded for making sure people stayed interested enough in archaeology to send money our way. I was so miserable I don't think I could see any fun in anything at the time. Based on that assessment, though, I am guessing the magazine editors at were making an effort to keep the readership entertained. It may have have looked different based on the trends of the time.
