What goes around

Trying to be a good citizen pays off. The Japanese guy in my department moved his whole family over to Japan and has been trying to get settled in despite having no English ability whatsoever. So the past week or so I've been helping him get his kids signed up for different activities. Last night I went after hours to help him sign his kids up for the local swim team. I don't really mind doing it, and I figure it's karmic payback for all the people who helped me in Japan.

Then after I helped him fill out the forms and we drove by the local pool he stopped at his house, which is within walking distance of mine, wo I could meet his family.

His kids are adorable, and presented me with a Detective Conan jigsaw puzzle as a present for my help. (I have Conan figurines on my desk so my coworker knew about my love) And his wife gave me a little drawstring bag. It was totally sweet of them, they didn't have to do that.

I have a feeling I'll be seeing a lot of his family on off hours, and I think that'll be nice.

(Even though the puzzle was 500 pieces, it was easy enough for me to put together overnight. I'm thinking of giving it back to the kids so they can play too.)

That is incredibly adorable.

I was actually thinking about you a few weeks ago, when Washington's cherry blossoms were at peak. One of our cardiology fellows is in the same situation-- moved his family here from Japan for his fellowship, although he does have reasonable English speaking skills. And he wanted to see the cherry blossoms, so we ended up taking him, his wife, and his little girl down to the Tidal basin for the festival. You probably would have made a way better guide than I did.

Mind you, this is the same family that we had out to dinner a few months ago, and when our respective languages were sputtering about, we communicated by playing Guitar Hero 3.

Guitar Hero brings people together. Surely it would end violence in the Middle East.

Also, I see you're planning a Mews-vacation. I am full of the envies. Why can't I just go on vacation for three years?

Sabbatical. Oh yeah.
