For your first thing I'd recommend something simple (I seem to remember you starting off knitting with washcloths and scarves).When I first learnt to sew I made things like pencil cases, drawstring bags and pillowcases before moving onto very simple patterns like elastic-waist shorts and T-shirts. But if there's something more complicated that you really want to make, go for it! Just, you know, measure twice cut once, pin pin pin, and don't rush ;)
And use patterns! They're very handy :)
