lamest nightmares

I really, really hate late night phone calls. You know, the ones that come in at 1:00 in the morning, but are fortunately not emergencies but some frat boy's drunken misdial. But my heart always goes straight to my throat and I can't calm down for forever after one.

So last night I woke up in a panic, hearing the phone ring. Except...I haven't connected a phone here. And my cell phone plays Linus & Lucy from Peanuts. So it was just a dream.

What kind of stupid nightmare is a ringing phone? C'mon subconscious, you've got to get with it.

A number of years ago I had a phone ringing nightmare that went even further. I dreamt that the phone woke me in the middle of night. I couldn't reach the phone, so the answering machine picked up. It was one of my friends calling in tears to tell me she'd been raped. She finished the call, and at that point I woke up so alarmed and disoriented that I didn't even realize it was a dream. It was sometime around three in the morning and I very nearly "called her back." The only reason I didn't, was that I look at the answering machine before calling and realized there were no messages on the machine.

So yeah, phone ringing dreams are scary. And so are dreams where a voice says your name.

Holy crow! See, now that is a legitimately terrifying dream. Mine never got farther than the phone ringing, that woke me up. *shiver*

....Last night's dream involved explosives, a turkey, the assassination of a 19th century royal family member and rosie the riveter. It was bizarre.
